First case
On March 1, 2020, the Ministry of Public Health confirmed the first case of coronavirus disease 2019 (covid-19) in the Dominican Republic, in the La Altagracia province.
It is about Claudio Pascualini, a 62-year-old male patient of Italian nationality, who entered the country on February 22, 2020, from Pesaro, Marche Region in Italy, where an outbreak of this new coronavirus has been ongoing since January 2020, and has already affected 888 people in Italy.
The patient sought care at a health center in the place of lodging in the province of La Altagracia, from where he was transferred to the Dr. Ramón de Lara Military Hospital.
Based on the patient’s travel history and symptoms, health professionals suspected this new coronavirus. A clinical sample was collected and sent to the Dr. Defilló National Public Health Laboratory, where tests confirmed the diagnosis.

Since the WHO warned of this new virus last January, the country has taken a series of measures to protect the health of the population and health workers.
Among the measures implemented, the Emergency Operations Center has been activated as a coordination platform to support the preparation and response to COVID-19.
