DR with the basic basket cheaper than El Salvador, Panama and Ecuador

SANTO DOMINGO.– The cost of the basic food basket in the Dominican Republic is below Panama, Ecuador and El Salvador, indicated an analysis by Bloomberg, which was published this Monday on its portal Bloomberglinea.com.

The comparison, prepared with data provided by the statistical offices of each country, places the country in position number seven of the fourteen Latin American countries that the international publication weighted.

According to the data presented, as of May 2022 the cost of the basic basket in the Dominican Republic, expressed in US dollars, is 184.5. Meanwhile, that of El Salvador amounts to 227.4, that of Panama rises to 280 and that of Ecuador stood at 281.7.

The publication positions Guatemala among the highest costs of the Basic Food Basket (CBA) in Latin America, followed by Venezuela with US$382, and Honduras with US$285.56.

In contrast, the countries with the lowest CBA costs are Colombia, Chile, Mexico, Peru, Argentina, Brazil, and Bolivia.

According to figures from the Central Bank, the five products of the Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages group with the most price increases in May were: cassava (11.15%), fresh chicken (1.22%), avocados (14.52%), soybean oil (2.45 %), and onions (5.66%).
