The executive director of the Port Authority Dominican (Apordom), Jean Luis Rodríguez, assured that the country is getting closer to becoming the Cruise Hub of Caribbeanreaching the “historical” number of 85,912 cruise ships that arrived on the Dominican coast in October of this year.

He pointed out that with those data the same month of 2019 is exceeded, which was 61,209 passengers.

Rodríguez affirmed that: “In October of this year we received 85,912 cruise passengersan increase of 149% compared to October 2021 and 40% compared to October 2019. We surpassed the numbers of the prepandemic and the high season is just beginning!”

When showing the growth figures of the sector, Rodríguez explained that only in the month of October in amber cove received 49,318 cruise passengers; in Taino Bay landed 26,004, and in The Roman Some 10,590 passengers arrived.

“In the last two years we have managed to diversify the reception platform and cruise ships on the Dominican Republicincorporating new terminals, with it the arrival of hundreds of ships and thousands of passengers per Seawaythus promoting the development and revitalization of the economy in various parts of the country”, he emphasized.

Of the 85,912 foreigners who arrived in Dominican coasts80,448 descended from their respective boats to the mainland, where they were able to enjoy the tourist attractionscultural and natural that the Dominican Republic.

Also, starting from the statistics which establish that each cruise passenger who steps on Dominican soil spendsper capita, an approximate of 100 dollars, the cruise industry for this month of October meant an injection of around 8,044,800 US dollars to the local economy.

the owner of Apordom explained that we are currently receiving cruise passengers in two anchors and four cruise terminals, which are:

  • Sans Souci,
  • Amber Cove,
  • Roman and
  • Taíno Bay, these last two in expansion.

In addition, “we have two more terminals running, Port Cabo Rojo Y Samana Bayport; addition to those that are in operation, a process with the General Directorate Public Private Partnerships for Arroyo Barril and in design analysis of a last one, in Barahona”.

According to statisticsthe terminals that have received the most vessels are Amber Cover Y Taino Bayboth in Puerto Plata; followed by La Romana.

Apordom in his goal to convert the Dominican Republic in a hub of Regional Cruises and the Caribbean has allied itself with other Port entities such as that of Puerto Rico and Curacao.

This alliance, in order to share experiences and create a joint itinerary package plan that will be offered to cruise lines, in order to continue increasing the number of Dominican territory.
