In the program DR with Demori which will air this Tuesday (23), at 11 pm, on TV Braziljournalist Leandro Demori talks to economist Laura Carvalho. Author of the book Brazilian Waltzwinner of the Jabuti Prize, professor at the University of São Paulo (USP) and director at the Open Society Foundation, she analyzes the current economic scenario and the measures needed to reduce social inequality in the country.
In the chat, Laura says that her interest in economics began in her childhood, when she lived through the hyperinflation of the 1980s. “During the hyperinflation, every Brazilian was a bit like a finance minister, and had an opinion on what should or shouldn’t be done. Living through hyperinflation is something that puts the economy very much at the center, but living through inequality is also something that is very present even today,” she compares.
In the program, the economist analyzes the importance of a tax reform that can reduce social inequality, with a review of the income tax table that impacts the richest. “The topic of taxes is super difficult all over the world. People usually have little idea of where they are in the income distribution – they either think they are richer or poorer than they are. In Brazil, this discussion is aggravated by a perception that the State does not deliver what it could deliver”, she analyzes.
