He National Energy Plan (PEN) establishes a clear framework for the growth of the renewable sectorwith the goal of reaching 25% generation with clean sources by 2025 and 30% by 2030.
This was stated by the executive director of the National Energy Commission (CNE), Edward Veras, who also highlighted the progress of the Dominican Republic in the energy storagea key piece for the success of the transition towards a electrical system more resilient and sustainable.
During the Forum “Energy Sector Reform“, organized by the Dominican Association of the Electrical Industry (ADIE) and the Technological Institute of Santo Domingo (INTEC), Veras stressed that the country is taking firm steps not only in the adoption of renewable energies, but also in the integration of storage, essential to guarantee stability and system reliability.
“A few years ago, the energy storage It was financially unviable. Today, thanks to technological advances and policies that promote their implementation, such as resolutions that encourage storage in solar projects, we are seeing this technology become a reality in our country,” he stated.
One of the most notable milestones is the implementation of the first storage system of four hours, which will be operational in the middle of next year, associated with a solar project.
This system will enter the spot market without a purchase contract energy (PPA), which reflects confidence in the opportunities offered by the energy sector Dominican.
Veras explained that these types of projects represent a new phase for the industry, where storage not only complements the renewable generationbut also strengthens the resilience of the electrical system in the face of fluctuations in demand and supply.
This advance in energy storage is supported by recent regulatory updates made by the CNE. In accordance with its powers and with the approval of its board of directors, the CNE recently issued the Resolution CNE-AD-0005-2024, which modifies the previous Resolution CNE-AD-0004-2023.
This new resolution establishes more favorable conditions for the processing of concessions for electricity generation projects under a special regime that integrate storage systems (BESS), from variable renewable energy sources (ERV).
Energy planning
“We are seeing storage emerge as the central axis for us to achieve these goals, facilitating the integration of more clean energy and offering solutions to the intermittency challenges presented by sources such as solar and wind,” said Veras.
As for the public policythe owner of the CNE praised the transparency of competitive processes and the legal certainty that has allowed the expansion of private investments in the energy sector.
Forum
The forum, held at Hotel El Embajadorbrought together leaders of the electricity sector, economists, technicians and academics to discuss the challenges and opportunities of the energy system Dominican.
