Authorities of the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP) announced the death of Dr. Rodrigo Álvarez Cambra this Thursday afternoon in Havana. He was 88 years old.
After the closure of the University of Havana in 1956, he worked at the Calixto García Hospital. In 1964 he finished his medical studies and then went to France to specialize in orthopedics.
Upon his return to Cuba, he assumed the direction of the Frank País Orthopedic Hospital, later the Frank País International Orthopedic Scientific Complex.
The history of Cuban sports cannot be written without his name. He treated and saved the careers of countless injured athletes, including several Olympic champions.
He received numerous distinctions and awards for his work, including that of Hero of Labor of the Republic of Cuba, and various decorations, medals and tributes.
He was also declared a researcher of merit, doctor honoris causa from various Latin American universities, and honorary and emeritus professor at various universities around the world.
He was president of the Cuban Society of Orthopedics and Traumatology and an honorary member and holder of several international scientific societies.
A living legend of Cuban orthopedics. He dedicated his entire life to the study and development of this specialty and to traumatology, as well as to research and the training of new batches of specialists.
It was announced that his body will be exposed at the Calzada y K Funeral Home, this Thursday, starting at 8:00 p.m.
In the coming days, tributes will be paid to him at the Frank País Orthopedic Hospital.
