The Minister of the Environment, Miguel Ceara Hatton, ratified on Monday the commitment of the Dominican Republic to work for the protection of natural resources and against climate change.
The official delivered a speech at the opening ceremony of the XI Ibero-American Conference of Ministers of Environmentwith the participation of 22 countries in the region and will last until Tuesday.
He warned about the challenges and opportunities to achieve sustainable development and a fair green recovery of the Ibero-American region.
“This conference brings us together at a crucial moment, as decision makers, having the rare opportunity to change the course of human history towards a resilient world, where everyone can prosper and have opportunities”, said Ceara Hatton.
The investment
“This could suppose an economic cost for Latin America of around 100,000 million dollars a year by 2050,” the minister specified.
Likewise, the investment necessary to adapt to the inevitable climatic effects is estimated at between 17,000 and 27,000 million dollars a year, according to a 2018 La Rábida report.
“The Dominican Republic is highly committed to contributing to the establishment of a common agenda that allows us to achieve these goals,” he continued.

He urged the development of strong, ambitious and inclusive commitments, focused on people and through which commitments to a green and just post-Covid recovery are reaffirmed.

The summit takes place at the Embajador hotel in the capital and began with the intervention of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Roberto Álvarez, Pro Tempore Secretary of the Dominican Republic.
Speakers include Gustavo Mañez, deputy director of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) office for Latin America and the Caribbean, and Marcos Pinta Gama, deputy secretary of the Ibero-American General Secretariat (SEGIB).
Also, Andrea Meza, Deputy Executive Secretary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD)
Likewise, Susana Esteban Berrocal, on behalf of the deputy secretary of the Ibero-American General Secretariat (SEGIB).
Also participating from the country were the Vice Minister of Multilateral Foreign Policy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Dominican Republic, Rubén Silié; Gloria Ceballos, director of the National Office of Meteorology and Olmedo Caba, executive director of the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources.
