MIAMI, United States. — Dr. Oscar Elías Biscet, founder of the Emilia Project, was arrested today in Havana, sources close to the renowned opponent assured different media.
The EFE Agency reported that the arrest of the activist was notified by his wife, Elsa Morejón, to the Inspire America organization, based in Miami and led by the lawyer of Cuban origin Marcell Felipe.
Sources close to Biscet assured newspaper the Americas that the opponent was arrested approximately one block from his home, located in the Lawton neighborhood, and that the arrest was carried out by a patrol that was in the area.
The arrest of Oscar Elías Biscet occurs just on the tenth anniversary of the Emilia Project, a pro-democratic organization founded by the activist.
“Around eight in the morning, he saw that his house was surrounded by patrol cars but he still went out because he is a citizen who defends free mobility, expression and association,” Oscar Elías Biscet’s wife told Newspaper Las Americas.
At the time of writing this information, the whereabouts of Dr. Biscet were unknown.
It is not the first time that Oscar Elías Biscet has been detained by agents of the political police. In recent years, the opponent has been arrested on several occasions. His home has also been the scene of operations that have included the confiscation of personal property and others used by the activist and his organization.
The Emilia Project was founded on January 9, 2013. Its name was adopted in homage to Emilia Teurbe Tolón, one of the Cuban heroines who dedicated the best of her fruitful life to the fight for the independence and freedom of Cuba.
