DR, elected in the OAS committee for follow-up against corruption

RD is elected vice president of the Expert Committee of the Mechanism for Follow-up on the Implementation of the Inter-American Convention Against Corruption of the OAS

Santo Domingo.– The Dominican Republic has been selected to occupy the vice presidency of the Expert Committee of the Mechanism for Follow-up on the Implementation of the Inter-American Convention Against Corruption (MESICIC).

Dr. Berenice Barinas, who has been working since August 2020 as an expert of the General Directorate of Government Ethics and Integrity (DIGEIG) before the MESICIC-OAS, was representing the Dominican Republic in that position.

Along with Barinas was also Carlos Pimentel Florenzán, general director of the General Directorate of Public Procurement (DGCP) and executive director of the Cabinet for Transparency, Prevention and Expenditure Control.

The MESICIC is the body responsible for the technical analysis of the implementation of the Convention by the States Parties. This Committee meets twice a year to consider and approve the anti-corruption reports of the States analyzed.

In this way, good practices are exchanged and issues of collective interest are discussed with a view to strengthening cooperation against corruption within the framework of the Convention.

MESICIC experts, with the support of the Technical Secretariat, analyze national laws and institutions and assess whether they conform to the provisions of the Convention and whether they are effective in preventing and combating corruption.

Before the election to the vice-presidency of the Committee of Experts, the Dominican government thanked the trust to occupy the position, at the same time that it reiterated its commitment to the MESICIC, supporting the monitoring of the implementation of the Convention.

At the same time, promoting cooperation and exchange of information, experiences, good practices and the harmonization of legislation among all the member states.

Similarly, the Dominican Republic reaffirmed its interest in ensuring the effectiveness of the measures and actions to prevent, detect, punish and eradicate acts of corruption in the exercise of public functions and acts of corruption.

At this meeting, the Republic of Panama assumed the Presidency of the Committee of Experts to Follow-up on the Implementation of the Inter-American Convention Against Corruption (MESICIC).

The election was held within the framework of the 39th meeting of said mechanism, held from March 13 to 16 of this year in Washington DC at the Headquarters of the Organization of American States (OAS).
