DR considers dengue controlled, with no positive cases in 3 weeks

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Republic registers a “significant” decrease in the incidence of dengue, compared to the same period in 2023 and, for the third consecutive week, no confirmed positive cases have been reported, so the Ministry of Public Health He said on Thursday that dengue is under control.

During Epidemiological Week 32, 51 suspected cases of dengue were reported, of which 76.47% (39 cases) were analyzed, but none presented a positive result, Public Health reported in a statement.

The cumulative number of confirmed cases so far this year is 1,010 and the current incidence rate is 15.38 per 100,000 inhabitants, which represents a decrease of 28% compared to the same period in 2023.

The Ministry of Public Health noted that at the end of 2023 there was a significant incidence of dengue cases in the Dominican Republic, as in much of the American continent.

But in the past four weeks, the department said, the country has moved from the safe (yellow) zone to the successful (green) zone.

The ministry attributed the sustained decline in dengue to preventive measures that anticipated the forecasts of a large influx of cases worldwide and that are continuously being implemented at the national level.

He indicated that, according to reports from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), in Latin America between epidemiological weeks 1 and 31 of 2024, 11,321,338 suspected cases of dengue were reported, an accumulated incidence of 1,185.51 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

Of the reported cases, 6,010,361 were laboratory confirmed, 15,461 were classified as severe dengue and 6,303 people died, for a fatality rate of 0.056%.
