DR adds 17 cases of cholera without report of deaths

Santo Domingo. – The Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance (MSP), notified this Wednesday four new cases of angeradding 17 confirmed cases, while specifying that no deaths from this disease have been reported.

The information was offered by the Vice Minister of Collective Health, Dr. Eladio Pérez, who indicated that of 13 cases evaluated, 4 were positive for cholera, which adds up to a total of 17 confirmed cases in the country so far, 4 imported and 13 local.

“We maintain active surveillance and of the 17 reported cases, all are in their respective homes. Timely care has been provided to patients, and the Ministry also maintains the promotion and prevention day, which has made it possible to maintain control of the disease,” said Vice Minister Pérez during a press conference.

He stressed that in the neighboring country of Haiti, reports point to more than 24,000 cases of cholera, while in the Dominican Republic the case is different thanks to the interventions that have been carried out, and the controls that are being met.

“We have activated the preventive alert since the first case in Haiti was reported in a timely manner,” he said.

In addition, he guaranteed that the MSP has been transparent in the notification and publication of the results of cholera and other diseases. He added that there are determining factors in health such as: quality of life, food management, consumption, displacement, which influence the spread of diseases.

Likewise, he pointed out that government institutions have been integrated to face these conditions, they have not concentrated only in the La Zurza sector, but have extended to the different Health Areas, forming teams that control and maintain the alert.

For her part, Dr. Gina Estrella, director of Risk Management and Disaster Response, indicated that last weekend Public Health, in coordination with Health areas IV, V and VI, carried out a survey in the sector
La Zurza, which consisted of going house to house applying samples randomly in search of cholera cases.

The samples were even applied to asymptomatic people, with a total of 68 samples to which are added those taken at the Doctor Félix María Goico Hospital, of which the four cases reported to date resulted.

He specified that the MSP continues with the cholera promotion and prevention efforts in this sector, together with the Santo Domingo Aqueduct and Sewerage Corporation (CAASD), the Ministry of the Environment, Education, the Santo Domingo City Council and Public Works, with these last two and FundaZurza has a project
do the dredging to avoid accumulation of debris.

Dr. Estrella asked the general population not to consume food or water that is not of safe origin, regardless of where they are in the country in order to avoid cases of cholera or any gastrointestinal disease.

While Dr. Jesús María Guerrero, director of the Doctor Félix María Goico Hospital, clarified that the patient who died in recent days died of kidney problems.

He specified that “he arrived at the emergency room, where an antigen test was applied that was positive, however, he had very high creatinine values, which triggered his death.”

For his part, José José, president of the Union and Development Neighborhood Board of La Zurza, thanked on behalf of his community the actions that the MSP has carried out in that sector since the first case was detected.

“The Ministry has been day by day, focused on our sector and the community members value this support to ensure our health, these works have been successful and we feel very satisfied,” he stressed.

Denies publication

In addition, the MSP denied a publication circulating on social networks where it shows the figure of the Minister of Health, Dr. Daniel Rivera, recommending a medication against arterial hypertension.

The director of Communications, Carlos Suero called on citizens to be careful about consuming products that do not have their proper health registration issued by that body.

At the same time, he asked to ignore the information published by the Healing People marketing page.
