During the high-level meeting held by the Organization of the United Nations (UN) to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the International Day for Elimination of Violence against Womenthe Dominican ambassador José White pointed out that the policies to present this scourge are failing and proof of this is that one in three women in the world continues to face some type of violence and just like the numbers of ladies in shelters.
The diplomatic representative of the Dominican Republic to the UN indicated that there continues to be a failure at the root of the problem of violence against the women, which is structural inequality and the stereotypes that perpetuate it. He appreciated the advances in the legal framework and the creation of infrastructure, such as shelters for victims, but maintained that none of this has been enough to speak of progress in the fight against this social evil.
“Is it enough? The answer is no. How can we talk about progress while one in three women in the world continues to face violence? Because every call, every women protected, is proof that we continue to fail at the root of the problem: structural inequality and the stereotypes that perpetuate this violence“deplored the diplomat.
Blanco defined violence as a public and global crisis.
“We need to accelerate the implementation of policies effective, allocate sufficient resources, build strong institutions and ensure that all women live a life without violence“, he stated. At the same time, he emphasized that the violence It is a complex problem but one that can be avoided “if we act with determination and unity.”
He called for this anniversary, which was designated in memory of the Mirabal Sistersmurdered during the regime of the dictator Rafael Leónidas Trujillo in Dominican Republic in 1960, not only a commemoration but a turning point. “May our words today be translated into policiesin actions, in measurable results. “Let us address the structural causes to put an end to this scourge.”
He concluded: “For the Mirabal Sistersfor each women who has faced the violence and for the generations that follow us, let us raise our voices with determination: Not one less!”
Dominican Republic Stocks
Specifying that the efforts have not been sufficient, diplomat José Blanco said that, in terms of the fight against sexist violence, the Dominican Republic has established a regulatory framework to promote gender equality and combat violence, carrying out more inclusive policies.
He cited the strategic plan “For a Life Free of Violence”, the creation of 17 shelters, the strengthening of the emergency line and the Supérate Mujer program that provides survivors of gender violence with support for their economic empowerment.
In addition, he pointed out that between 2020 and 2023, 6,000 protections and nearly 382,000 psychological and legal assistance were provided in the country to women in situations of violence.
