The Cuban teams participating in the 44 Olympiad of Chess added this Monday new triumphs in the tournament that is celebrated in the city of Chennai, in the Indiawhere four of the 11 agreed rounds have already been held.
Set Cuban registered in the Open contest, which has an average rating of 2,552 points, won the day against the most renowned Hungarian team (2,607), according to a report from the agency Latin Press (PL).
The triumph materialized thanks to the victories in the first and fourth boards of the Grand Masters (GM) Yasser Quesada (2568) and Omar Almeida (2523). Quesada, the current national champion, beat Víctor Erdos with white pieces (2586), while Almeida, with black figures, imitated him against Gergely Kantor (2582).
In addition, GMs Carlos Daniel Albornoz (2,566) and Ferenc Berkes (2,649) and Isan Ortiz (2,526) drew against his counterpart Tamas Banusz (2,611), adds the journalistic information.

With this result, Cuba now appears in seat 15 of the largest collective contest of the International Chess Federation (FIDE), in the best position in Latin America in the tournament. This Tuesday the team from the Island will compete against Azerbaijan, one of the strongest countries in this fight, which is played at the Four Points by Sheraton Convention Center in Mahabalipuram.
Meanwhile, in the women’s section, the Cubans defeated Sweden by 2.5 to 1.5, points, after the tie at the first table of Lisandra Ordaz (2367), leading the white pieces, against the legendary GM Pia Cramling (2459), and the two victories of Maritza Arribas (2239) and Yaniela Forgas (2343), against Viktoria Johansson (2041) and Jelena Andric (1993), respectively.
The only win for the Swedes was in charge of Inna Agrest (2217) over Yerisbel Miranda (2347), at the second table, she notes PL.
Now the Cubans are in eleventh place in the championship, also leading Latin America, after the fourth round of the women’s competition, led by Azerbaijan, Poland and Ukraine, in that order. This Tuesday the girls from the largest of the Antilles will face those from Kazakhstan, who occupy the tenth position.
