Double murder in Baracoa leaves two minors orphaned

Yinet Labañino (en la foto) y su pareja, un hombre que aún no ha sido identificado, fueron asesinados este lunes

‘CubaNet’ confirmed the facts independently after reviewing images of the crime sent by a collaborator residing in Baracoa.

MIAMI, United States. – A couple was found dead in their home near Puente Miel, in Baracoa, on Monday night, according to reports on Facebook the independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada and the middle The Scissors. The female victim was identified as Yinet Labañino, while the identity of her partner has not been publicly revealed.

Local sources, reported by independent media, claim that the attack was carried out by a man with previous romantic ties to Labañino. Neighbors have described the scene as “devastating” and have reported that, although the arrest of a suspect is mentioned, no official details have yet been known about his identity or the motives for the crime.

The death of the couple leaves orphans two minors, children of the murdered woman: a teenager and a small child.

Neighbors, acquaintances of the victims and social media users They have expressed their indignation and fear at a crime that once again shakes the tranquility of the city.

Until the time of publication of this note, there was no official information on arrests, progress in the investigation or statements from the competent authorities. The state portals reviewed so far have not addressed the case.

The double homicide once again brings to the fore the urgency of ensuring effective protection for women and families in vulnerable communities, as well as the need for transparent investigations when crimes involving gender violence or domestic violence are reported.

Homicide or feminicide?

The crime presents features that allow it to be considered, based on the information available, as a possible feminicide. The main victim identified is a woman, allegedly murdered by a man who had or maintained a romantic relationship with her, inside a home and in an intimate environment.

These elements coincide with the patterns that, at the regional level, are used to define feminicide: the murder of a woman for reasons of gender, often committed by partners, ex-partners or men with whom the victim had an emotional relationship and in private spaces.

However, there is still no public and specific classification of this fact by the independent organizations that monitor sexist violence in Cubanor an official communication from the judicial or police authorities that allows us to affirm, without nuances, that the case has been recognized as a femicide.

On the Island, furthermore, the term does not appear classified as an autonomous figure in the Penal Codeso that violent deaths of women are usually registered under other crimes (such as homicide or murder), and the classification as feminicide falls, in practice, to the work of observatories and independent feminist groups.

Since 2019, the magazine’s Gender Observatory Tense Wings (OGAT and the YoYesTeCreo platform in Cuba (YSTCC) They have verified at least 300 femicides in Cubadespite operating in a hostile environment characterized by the criminalization of feminist activism, restricted access to institutional sources and the lack of a legal classification of feminicide in Cuban legislation.

While the authorities use expressions such as “murder for gender reasons” or “extreme gender violence”, independent groups insist on the need to name the problem as feminicide and demand the creation of public registration protocols and a comprehensive law against gender violence.

The Cuban State does not systematically publish statistics with detailed methodology nor does it offer disaggregated data with an intersectional approach accessible to citizens. This institutional opacity continues to be an obstacle to measuring the true magnitude of the phenomenon.

The OGAT and YSTCC maintain support lines and a mechanism for reporting and verifying femicides and attempts, supported by citizen complaints, media coverage and work in the territory. Its methodology—based on community verification and public documentation—is available in its institutional channels.
