Double historical record is recorded in the demand for energy consumption

Judith Pena | April 4, 2023

Panama reported this Tuesday and for the first time a double historical record in the demand for energy consumption. According to the National Dispatch Center of the Electric Transmission Company, the record has been broken twice in the same day, informed the general manager of ETESA, Eng. Carlos Mosquera Castillo.

“At 2:50 pm today, Tuesday, April 4, the demand reached 2,078 MW and then after a few minutes, it rose to 2,079 MW, which means that this year, in less than 10 days, the last three historical records in the consumption of electrical energy in the country, because the previous one was last Monday, March 27, at 2:48 pm when the demand rose to 2,059 MW”, explained the ETESA manager.

Mosquera added that the previous maximum demand peaks in 2022 and 2021 occurred in May and so far in 2023 they have “anticipated” the months of March and April and recalled that when the consumption record was recorded on March, warned that it was not ruled out that another consumption record would be recorded again this year.

“Although the causes of these new consumption records are diverse, it must be borne in mind that there is a significant increase in productive and economic activities throughout the country: businesses, industries, agro-industries, shopping centers, and the logistics sector are operational. Although there is sufficient electricity supply to cover the demand, we always urge the rational use of electricity”, indicated Eng. Mosquera.

The previous maximum peaks in electricity consumption had been: March 27, 2023, of 2,059 MW, on May 4, 2022 of 2,031 MW last year and on May 20, 2021, of 2,020 MW.
