In the district of Huancán, province of Huancayo, Holy Week is not only recollection time, but also of colorful traditions. Some 18 donkeys participated in the traditional race with cargo, an event that brought together residents and visitors.

What most caught attention during the day was the creativity of the owners by baptizing their donkeys. Political figures and fashion terms became the new nicknames of these cargo animals. Among the most commented were “Ollantya” and “Nadin,” as explained by the owner, chose these names as a satire to the current political situation.
Since last year, another of the specimens that has gained notoriety is the donkey called “Dina Boluarte”, which was presented again this year and was one of the public’s favorites. Other names such as “Combina”, “Letty”, “Victoria” and “Capibara” also aroused applause and laughs among the attendees.

The District’s Economic Development Manager, Lic. Robert Almiagorda, said the competition is divided into several categories and covers the section that goes from the local cemetery to the Plaza de Huari. The awards for the participants are: sacks of rice, sugar, noodles and even sums in cash.
The donkey’s career in Huancán, in addition to being a picturesque holiday, reflects popular ingenuity and the way in which humor is intertwined with tradition, even in contexts of social criticism.
