The Union of Dominican Writers (UED) asked the Ministry of Culture to increase to RD$500,000.00 (five hundred thousand pesos) the amount that the authors awarded the annual literature prizes should receive, which would be equal to the amount received by the person who receives the Annual Literature Prize. At the same time, the organization advocated that the jury of the annual prizes awarded by the Ministry of Culture receive a minimum of RD$100,000.00 (one hundred thousand pesos) for their work.
The request was made to the Minister of Culture, Milagros Germán, during a recent visit by a delegation from the UED board, led by Emilia Pereyra, president of the entity, Avelino Stanley, vice president, and Marino Berigüete, in charge of affairs. international.
On the occasion, in addition to advocating for the aforementioned increase and dealing with other issues, the UED commission gave the minister a letter in which she argued about what was requested.
“If you take our suggestion into account, you would be correcting an oversight that has been made in the evaluation of similar genres, which require the same intellectual effort and creativity,” the writers argued.
Currently, those who win in each of the lines of the annual literature prizes receive RD$300,000.00, in exchange for the Annual History Prize they receive RD$500,000.00.
In addition, the directors expressed: “Likewise, we believe it is necessary that, in the case of the unpublished works that win the annual literature prizes, these must be published in the corresponding period and distributed through the appropriate channels so that they reach the greatest number of people. possible public.
They indicated to Minister Milagros Germán that, if the suggestions were applied, a just measure would be taken in favor of the writers.
