Dominican Republic begins the process to join the OECD and strengthen its economic and social institutions

República Dominicana inicia proceso para ingresar a la OCDE y fortalecer su institucionalidad económica y social

Santo Domingo.– In search of create regulations that combat tax evasion, informality and social defenselessnesshe Dominican government formally began the process to join the OECD.

For this purpose, the Foreign Minister Roberto Álvarez headed the first meeting of the Presidential Commission for the Admission of the Dominican Republic to the OECD. Among the Latin American countries that are already part of this organization are Mexico, Chile, Colombia and Costa Ricawhile Dominican Republic would be the first member of the Caribbean.

During the meeting it was reported that the OECD has on his agenda “a comprehensive review of the institutional framework and public policiesin accordance with the organization’s standards, since justice is a transversal axis for the consolidation of the rule of law and the strengthening of citizen trust,” he explained. The Deputy Minister of Finance, Camila Hernándezstated that “By entering the OECD we will be able to more effectively combat tax evasion, informality and social defenselessness”, when participating in the meeting.

Public and private governance

For its part, the General Director of Ethics and Government Integrity, Milagros Ortiz Boschpointed out that “Entering the OECD is the way to ensure that integrity will encompass the entire government and the entire Dominican society, by adhering to the most advanced standards of public and private governance.”

The president of ProCompetencia, María Elena Vásquezrecalled that “ProCompetencia has been working with the OECD for four years. Thanks to the review he made of our competition law, we will modernize it to protect Dominicans from foreign anti-competitive practices against which we are defenseless.”

Likewise, the Vice Minister of Foreign Trade, Vilma Arbajeexpressed that “With the OECD we want to review our investment policies and thus modernize our outdated legislation on the matter.”

Also participating in the meeting were Vice Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Presidency and Administration, Francisco Caraballo, Alexis Jiménez and Gray Peñarespectively; in addition to Javier Cabrejageneral communications coordinator of the Judiciary, and Abraham Silvafrom the Ministry of Education.

They accompanied the chancellor Ambassador Juan José PortorrealChief of Staff; Ambassador Federico Alberto Cuello Camilocoordinator of the Dominican Republic’s entry into the OECD; Boni GuerreroLegal Director of MIREX; Tomas Tamaresdirector of Economic Affairs; and Carlos Hernandezdirector of International Cooperation.

The OECDwhose headquarters are located in Chateau de la Muettein Parismaintains an active relationship with civil society through consultations with the business sector and worker representativesin addition to sharing information through its publications and digital platforms.
