Dominican Republic announces new requirements for Cuban travelers

MIAMI, United States.- The Dominican Republic announced on Monday new requirements for Cubans who arrive in transit to the country, due to an increase in travelers of that nationality, according to a report by the EFE news agency.

According to the General Directorate of Migration of that country, as of April 30 Cubans in transit must have a residence, citizenship or a multiple visa from the United States, Canada, Great Britain, the Member States of the Schengen area or from the Dominican Republic itself.

“This measure is taken due to the increase in cases of passengers of Cuban nationality not admitted, which generates inconveniences at the country’s immigration control posts,” the institution explained in a statement. release.

That is why, after analyzing and consulting with the relevant agencies, “it is understood that it is necessary to implement more practical and effective immigration controls in relation to foreigners of Cuban nationality who travel to the Dominican Republic to another destination,” reads the document from the Directorate of Migration.

This measure comes after a resolution taken at the end of March by Migration established that to enter the country Cubans would need a visa from the Dominican Republic or from the United States, Canada, Great Britain or the Member States of the Schengen area.

Given the massive exodus of Cubans in recent months, several countries in the area have taken measures to control the flow of citizens from the island into their territories, something that the Havana regime attributes to pressure from the United States.

That alleged interference by Washington has been described by Havana as “a cynical effort to close the doors to emigration that it has stimulated for decades.”

“The United States government fails to comply with its legal obligation to grant no less than 20,000 annual visas to Cubans, according to bilateral agreements, imposes the burden of the brutal economic blockade and pressures other governments to require transit visas for Cuban migrants and travelers. ”, the foreign minister of the Cuban regime Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla recently wrote on Twitter.
