NEW YORK.- Violence continues to engulf this city. Police officer Dennis Vargas, presumably Dominican, was shot in the Bronx by 25-year-old African-American Rameek Smith, a confessed criminal who should have been imprisoned for serious crimes committed.
After his action, the gunman was shot in the head by the wounded agent’s comrade-in-arms.
The incident occurred when around midnight on Tuesday Smith was walking near Third Avenue and Claremont Parkway in the aforementioned county, and two police officers saw him with a weapon.

They ordered him to stop, but he fled being chased and in that the criminal turned around and shot at the uniformed men, wounding Vargas in one arm, an action repelled without wasting time by the other uniformed man.
Police said the shooter had an extensive criminal history and his multiple crimes include: Jumping a turnstile at the Coney Island Subway station in Brooklyn in 2020, fleeing from police.
He was then arrested and charged with possession of a loaded .32 caliber pistol. A Brooklyn grand jury indicted him on multiple charges, including third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, trespassing, reckless endangerment and resisting arrest.
Prosecutors asked to keep him in jail on $50,000 bail, citing a previous robbery conviction on Staten Island in 2016, for which he served just four months in jail and five years of probation.
The judge denied the request and allowed Smith to be released without bail.
Mayor Eric Adams touched on the issue of guns in the city and the court system. “Who is going to protect innocent New Yorkers? It is time to stop protecting the criminal.”
