Dominican Orthopedic Society calls for caution in the use of fireworks

Sociedad Dominicana de Ortopedia llama a la prudencia en uso de fuegos artificiales

On the eve of the celebration of New Yearthe Dominican Society of Orthopedics and Traumatologythrough its president, Héctor López, makes an urgent call to the Dominican population to avoid the misuse of fireworksespecially those manipulated without proper precautions.

López expressed his concern about the growing number of people who, every year, are injured due to the irresponsible handling of these devices, especially among children and young people. “Reckless use of fireworks can cause severe burns, amputations and other irreparable damage. In many cases, these injuries require specialized medical attention, and it is necessary for the population to be aware of the risks involved,” highlighted the president of the society.

In addition, López stressed the importance of having a specialized burn unit in the northern region of the country, given that many of these incidents occur in areas outside the capital, making quick access to specialized medical care difficult. “It is essential that patients who suffer severe burns receive immediate care in an appropriate unit, where they can receive timely treatment to avoid long-term complications and sequelae. “The lack of infrastructure in this area in the north is one of our biggest concerns”he stated.

The Dominican Society of Orthopedics and Traumatology urges citizens to opt for safer celebration alternatives and to enjoy the New Year responsibly. It is emphasized that, if the use of fireworks is unavoidable, safety recommendations must be strictly followed and children must be prevented from handling these devices.

Likewise, the authorities are urged to reinforce prevention and awareness campaigns, as well as the regulation of the use of fireworks to avoid accidents that could put people’s health and lives at risk.

“This New Year, we ask all Dominicans to celebrate with joy, but also with responsibility. The health and well-being of everyone must be the priority,” concluded Dr. Héctor López.
