Dominican authorities reinforce cholera prevention at the border

Autoridades dominicanas refuerzan prevención del cólera en frontera

Santiago, RD.- Given the recent cholera outbreak in Haiti, Dominican health authorities have intensified controls at the border crossing in the Dajabón province, to prevent the spread of the disease. From this Thursdayinspectors from the Ministry of Public Health are deployed at the border bridge, applying strict health protocols.

The provincial director of Public Health, Dr. Zabeikis Rodríguez, expressed that measures have been implemented such as the prohibition of the entry of cooked foods from Haiti, since they are a source of contagion of “Vibrio cholerae”, the bacteria that causes cholera.

Additionally, educational materials are distributed in both Spanish and Creole to raise awareness among communities about the importance of prevention.

Rodríguez stressed that hygiene and health education are key in the fight against the disease. He advised frequent hand washing, the use of chlorine to disinfect food and proper cooking to avoid contagion.

In the binational market, one of the busiest points, preventive measures have also been reinforced. Inspectors check products and distribute information brochures on safe food handling.

Finally, the official assured that the Dajabón hospitals are prepared to deal with any suspected case of cholera.

“We are ready to act quickly, as we did on previous occasions,” concluded Rodríguez.
