Dollar today: it is trading at S/3,430 below Friday's close despite Boluarte's vacancy

He dollar It has been trading at S/3,430 in the interbank market, below Friday’s close, when the US currency stood at S/3,437, according to Bloomberg data.

The slight drop occurs despite the recent vacancy of President Dina Boluarte, a political event that, so far, has not generated significant volatility in the exchange rate.

According to Hugo Perea, chief economist for Peru at BBVA Research, the stability of the sol responds to the fact that the movements of the exchange market have been determined by global factors, and not by the internal situation.

“The day after the vacancy there was a slight depreciation, but it was due to cross-cutting factors. Tension increased in global markets after Trump’s more aggressive rhetoric regarding tariffs on China. All currencies in the region depreciated, although the sol fell the least among the large economies,” Perea explained.

The economist highlighted that investors do not perceive an abrupt change in the country’s economic leadership, which has contributed to calm in the exchange market.

“No one is seeing a disruptive change in the conduct of the economy, and that explains why we have not seen a greater impact on the exchange rate,” he added.

Perea pointed out that the behavior of the coming days will depend on how citizens perceive the political transition and the formation of the new cabinet.

“If people feel that this change meets their expectations for improvement in public management, stability could be maintained. But if the opposite happens, we could see some adjustment in expectations,” he said.

For now, the dollar remains stable and with a slight downward trend, in line with other regional currencies.
