Dollar falls to R$ 6.04 in anticipation of the Copom meeting

On a day of relief in the financial market, the dollar fell after two consecutive rises amid expectations for the Monetary Policy Committee (Copom) meeting and the fall in inflation. The commercial dollar closed this Tuesday (10) sold at R$ 6.047, with a decrease of R$ 0.035 (-0.58%). The price opened at R$6.02, but the fall decreased throughout the day. The day before, the dollar had closed at R$6.08 and broke a nominal value record since the beginning of the Real Plan.

The stock market had another day of recovery. B3’s Ibovespa closed at 128,228 points, up 0.8%. Shares of oil companies and companies linked to consumption, such as airlines and retailers, drove the rise.

This Tuesday, the financial market detached itself from the external scenario. The dollar fell against the real and the Mexican peso, while it rose against other emerging country currencies.

In Brazil, the domestic scenario weighed more. The financial market awaits the Copom meeting, which will decide by what amount the Selic rate (the economy’s basic interest rate) will rise. High interest rates encourage the entry of foreign capital into the country, reducing pressure on the dollar.

Another factor that brought relief to the financial market was the announcement that official inflation based on the Broad National Consumer Price Index lost strength and stood at 0.39% in November.

The expectation for the publication of an ordinance that releases the payment of Pix amendments, published only in the early evening, also reduced tensions. The release of parliamentary amendments increases the chances of the spending cut package announced in November being voted on later this year.
