The Cuban artivist and political prisoner Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara was detained for the last time on July 11, 2021, when he tried to join the massive protests that occurred on the Island that day. He was later transferred to the Guanajay maximum security prison and sentenced to five years in prison for the crimes of “outrage to national symbols”, “contempt” and “public disorder”.

Various organizations have pointed it out as a symbol of civic resistance. Amnesty International declared him a prisoner of conscience and Human Rights Watch and PEN International have on several occasions called for his immediate release.

In 2024, the Rafto Foundation awarded him its human rights prize, and in May 2025, the Human Rights Foundation (HRF) awarded him the Václav Havel International Prize for Creative Dissent during the Oslo Freedom Forum.

In September 2025, the Cubalex Legal Information Center denounced that Otero Alcántara was going through “a critical health situation” as a result of “an epidemic outbreak inside the prison.” The NGO added that the political prisoner “remained a week without communicating, which increased concern about his state of health in a context of constant harassment, abuse and inhumane prison conditions.”

Cuban filmmaker Ernesto Fundora Hernández was born in Havana in 1967. After emigrating to Mexico, he founded the audiovisual company Video Vueltas. Throughout his career he has made dozens of music videos, including two for Celia Cruz.
