Documentary about Cuba in Africa wins award at Burkina Faso Film and Television Festival

The documentary Cuba in Africaby Ethiopian-American filmmaker Negash Abdurahman, won the Prize Thomas Sankara at the Ouagadougou Pan-African Film and Television Festival (Fespaco), in Burkina Faso, one of the most prestigious festivals in the cinema African.

“Many people who saw the film were moved,” express Abdurahman to the Prensa Latina (PL) agency when referring to the participation of the audiovisual in that festival. «It is important to show this story about the unprecedented and heroic contribution of the Caribbean country to the fight against colonialism and apartheid in Africa Austral”, stressed the filmmaker.

The president of the jury of the contest, Rahmatou Keita, affirmed: “this pearl was the one that came closest to all the criteria of the Thomas Sankara Award”, PL specifies.

For Abdurahman, the next step for this project is “to see if we can turn it into a fictional feature film.”

The documentary, which premiered at the Infanta multiplex in Havana in April of last year, has so far won more than 20 awards around the world, including Best Documentary Short Film at the 30th edition of the Pan-African Film Festival and Art from Los Angeles, California in May 2022.

In the 28th edition of Fespaco, 30 short films competed for the Award, sponsored by the African Association of Film Directors, directed by the renowned filmmaker from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Balufu Bakupa-Kanyinda, highlights the publication

The celluloid festival was held from February 25 to March 4 in Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso, in West Africa.

Thomas Sankara was a prominent Pan-Africanist leader who presided over that nation from 1983 to 1987, the year he was overthrown and assassinated in a coup.
