Document from 1881 issued by former president Nicolás de Piérola returns to Peru

Specialists from the Ministry of Culture verified the repatriation of one hundred and sixty-two (162) cultural assets from the pre-Hispanic, viceregal and republican eras, which returned from the countries of Germany, Argentina, Canada and the United States, among which a document from the year stands out. 1881, issued by the former president of the Republic, Nicolás de Piérola.

At the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs it was verified that, from Germany, Sixty-seven (67) archaeological assets were returned, consisting of ceramic objects (pitchers, vessels, sculptures, etc.), a metal knife and a textile fragment.

The goods belong to the Nazca, Mochica, Wari, Tiahuanaco, Chimú, Chancay, Paracas, Lambayeque, Huaura, Chincha, Chimú-Inca and Inca cultures; To these is added one (1) fragment of a human skull, which is presumed to have been stolen from the Necropolis of Ancón pre-Hispanic cemetery, at the end of the 19th century.

From the aforementioned European nation, one (1) was also repatriated good documentary from the year 1812, called, “Appointment of dowry by the Brotherhood of the Santa María de la Caridad Hospital.”

Meanwhile, from Canada, a group of sixty-seven (67) goods of pre-Hispanic origin returned to the country, consisting of ceramic pieces and carved wooden spindles from the Wari, Chancay and Chincha cultures. In addition, one (1) piece of Chancay style ceramics was repatriated from the United States.

Repatriated from Argentina

Meanwhile, from Argentina, the repatriation of eight (8) cultural assets of numismatic type, from the viceregal period; Among them, one (1) medal of loyalty to King Carlos IV, from 1789, stands out; and two (2) medals of loyalty to King Ferdinand VII, both from 1808.

From this same South American republic, the restitution of the book was achieved “The sun and happy year of Peru”, a bibliographic asset from the year 1735, and sixteen (16) official public documents, generated between the end of the colonial period and the last decades of the republican stage of the 19th century.

Among the latter, a document issued by the former president, Nicolás de Piérola, in April 1881, in the context of the war between Peru and Chile, stands out. This document reports the appointment of a sergeant major of Argentine nationality, as sergeant major of the Peruvian Infantry, for his work in the battle of Miraflores, a battle that occurred on January 15 of that year.

The pieces repatriated from Canada and the United States returned as a result of voluntary returns by citizens of those countries, as did a good part of the goods from Germany.; The remaining part returned as a result of seizures carried out by the German authorities, under coordinated efforts between the Ministry of Culture and the Chancellery. Likewise, the cultural heritage recovered from Argentina was the result of the intervention of the authorities of said country.

The verification was carried out by specialists from the Recovery Directorate – a unit of the General Directorate for the Defense of Cultural Heritage of the Ministry of Culture -, jointly with specialists from the General Directorate for Cultural Affairs of the Chancellery.
