SLP, Mexico.- Doctors residing in the Rafael Freyre municipality, in Holguín, have asked the community to create a group of blood donors in order to offer help to those injured during the explosions occurred in a facility where war material is stored in the town of Melones.
“Considering the urgent situation, due to what happened in Melones, a massive blood donation has been called for tomorrow morning at the hospital Mario MunozPlease, anyone who can help, spread the word to friends and family,” wrote Dr. Tania Portelles Avila in her networks social.
In the publication it was indicated that before donating blood, milk or bread cannot be consumed.
“You can only have a little coffee or a glass of soda before donating,” he said in the note, given the magnitude of the accident.
According to the information Officially transmitted by the Ministry of the Armed Forces (MINFAR), the explosions this Tuesday, January 7, in a construction site where war material is stored, were caused by a fire.
Initially, 1,245 people were evacuated near the La Púa Popular Council in Gibara, while a commission investigated the causes of the explosions.
An update to the MINFAR note added that another 361 people residing near the site were evacuated.
“At this time, actions are continuing to determine the status of the personnel who initially confronted the incident, as well as the damage to property,” the text stated, without specifying whether there were injuries or deaths in the incident.
According to the regime’s statement, authorities from the Party, the Government, the Revolutionary Armed Forces, the Ministry of the Interior and the National Civil Defense General Staff went to the scene to determine the magnitude of the events.
Although they affirmed that they would inform the population “in a timely manner,” Cubans have demanded transparency after rumors that more than a dozen people were missing or dead. In the military unit where the incident took place, young recruits were completing their military service.
When the news broke on Tuesday morning, reports on social networks indicated that the military unit was storing “aged ammunition,” so the detonations could continue for some time.
This type of events is not unprecedented in Holguín. In July 2020, the population was surprised by two explosions that occurred in the Velasco Popular Council (municipality of Gibara), without any deaths or significant damage being recorded.
On that occasion, the MINFAR confirmed that “several explosions had occurred in a military unit in the town of Gibara.”
