Doctor Vitelio Carrera on the case of forced sterilizations: ‘This is a mystery, we don’t know who is complaining’

The regional director of health of Bocas del Toro, Vitelio Carrera, referred this Wednesday to the alleged forced abduction of indigenous women in that province, clarifying that he would love to review the files “if they told me who I am looking for.”

He stressed that this is a mystery, since there is no formal complaint before any authority about what was reported in the media.

“There is only one alleged person who went to Panama to file a complaint, but we do not know who is complaining, why they are complaining, where they did the procedure, who did it, because when we talk about the files of the procedures that the Ministry has done of Health and the Social Security Fund, all rest in the units where the procedures are carried out”, he remarked.

He stated that it is the first time they hear that this fault has been incurred. “There is no such complaint, no such complaint,” said Dr. Carrera.

According to the Minsa, in the Ngäbe-Buglé Comarcal Health Region in recent years no sterilization program has been practiced for the female population and in Bocas del Toro salpingectomy is performed selectively on Fridays, afternoons and Saturdays, while Salpingectomy is not performed at the Hospital del Oriente Chiricano in San Félix.
