Pediatrician Celso Barros, 73 years old, former president of Unimed Rio, and pre-candidate for the presidency of Fluminense Futebol Clube, died this Saturday (15), in Rio, from a heart attack, in the election on the 29th of this month. He became known in football, during the period in which the medical health cooperative was a sponsor of Fluminense, between 1999 and 2014.
He was director of the Rio Doctors Union, advisor to the Rio Regional Medicine Council (Cremerj) and also director of the Brazilian Medical Association (AMB).
In a statement, Fluminense Football Club expresses its deep regret at the death of the great tricolor Celso Barros. Character of great expression in the club’s history;
“Celso played a leading role as president of the sponsor of the team that won titles of national relevance, such as the 2007 Copa do Brasil and the 2010 and 2012 Brazilian Championships, in addition to finishing runner-up in the 2008 Copa Libertadores”.
Always in love, the pediatrician lived intensely the discussion about the club’s fate. He remained active in Fluminense politics and was, at this time, a pre-candidate for president for the next three years.
The text also says that “Fluminense expresses solidarity in this moment of sadness with his family, his friends and all the tricolors who admired him all these years. The club declares official mourning for his death and makes the Salão Nobre de Laranjeiras available to his family for the wake and due tributes.

With deep regret, the Football Federation of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Ferj) mourns the death of Celso Barros, former director of Fluminense, at the age of 73.
In a note, Ferj informs that “in the sporting field, Celso gained prominence as president of Unimed during the period in which the company was a partner of the Laranjeiras team, from 1999 to 2014. The director also “became known for enabling the hiring of big names to make up the tricolor squad, including players such as Romário, Edmundo, Fred, Conca, Deco and other stars who left their mark on the team over the years”, concludes the note.
