Doctor allegedly kidnapped in Paso Canoas released

Authorities in Chiriquí province have launched investigations after the release of a Panamanian doctor and rancher who had allegedly been kidnapped in the Paso Canoas border sector between Panama and Costa Rica.

It was learned that this Monday, at night, the doctor arrived walking to the Judicial Investigation Directorate (DIJ) of Paso Canoas in the province of Chiriquí and it is presumed that his release occurred after his relatives made the payment of a reward. Until now the amount is unknown.

The authorities seek to clarify this fact where the doctor, a resident of the district of Barú in Chiriquí, had allegedly been kidnapped since last Friday.

It was reported that the doctor was deprived of his freedom last Friday, when his vehicle was abandoned at the Paso Canoas border between Panama and Costa Rica, on the road to Canoas Arriba, near a shopping center.

A detainee in an anti-kidnapping operation

A man was apprehended during the development of an anti-kidnapping operation carried out this morning in the village of Paso Canoas, by the National Police in conjunction with units of the National Border Service (Senafront) and the Public Ministry.

The operational action arises after on Saturday, August 20, the alleged kidnapping of a person was reported in this border cord, by identified subjects of Costa Rican and Panamanian nationality. The event occurred in the middle of a negotiation for the purchase of a property, resulting in a kidnapping where they requested the amount of 200,000.00 dollars from relatives for the release of the victim.

In said operation, it was possible to recover the victim and seize cell phones, passport, cash of different denominations, documents and a vehicle.

The apprehended Panamanian national will be brought before a Guarantee Control Judge in the next few hours.
