The Superintendence of Banking, Insurance and AFPbetter known as the SBS) is the agency responsible for the regulation and supervision of the companies of the financial system, insurance, the private pension system (that is, of the AFPs) and that of the savings and credit cooperatives. Also, it has among its work to prevent and detect money laundering and terrorism financing.
But its primary objective is to preserve the interests of the depositors, of the people and companies that acquire financial, insurance products, as well as those affiliates to the AFP. To do this, it issues regulations (whose breach is sanctioned) that allow the stability, solvency and transparency of the companies that supervise.
Thus, within the functions of the SBS is to provide authorization to capture public deposits. We must understand by public deposits to all those operations in which financial institutions receive money from their clients, so they commit to pay an interest rate (passive interest rate) depending on the established term.
What are the main deposit operations (also known as passive operations)? Are:
- Savings account
- Current accounts
- Term deposits
- CTS deposits
How many companies are authorized by the SBS to capture deposits from their customers? In total there are 42, of which 20 are banks, 6 are financial companies, 11 municipal boxes and 5 rural boxes. The rest of the companies that do not appear within this list are not authorized, which is illegal. People who leave their money in unauthorized companies to capture deposits are at risk of being scammed and lose their money.
Also, of these 42 companies, five banks only capture deposits of companies and organizations, and not of people. This is the case of: Citibank of Peru, Banco Santander, Banco ICBC Peru, Bank of China Peru and BCI Peru.
It should be taken into account that, although the SBS within their work records companies that due to their activity they must report suspicious operations of asset washing and terrorism financing, that does not imply that supervise or regulate them or that they have authorized them to capture money from the public.
What are those companies authorized to capture public deposits?

Savings and Credit Cooperatives
Savings and credit cooperatives are not authorized to capture public deposits as such, but only to capture deposits of their associates. Their associates are people who belong to a community, share certain links, are committed to complying with certain standards, among other characteristics. Savings and credit cooperatives have a special regulation. Not all are covered by the cooperative deposit insurance fund (FSDCOOP) and the coverage of this (between S/5,000 and S/10,000) is lower than the deposit insurance fund (FSD) of the rest of the financial system (which is s/120,500).
Care and what to do if you have doubts
If you have doubts about the legality of an entity and want to verify if it is authorized to capture deposits you can call the SBS at 0-800-10840 Free line (it is the only number of the SBS), from Monday to Friday from 8:00 am to 5:30 pm.
Usually, when you are not a client of an entity and you want to open an account to make a deposit you must approach one of its branches. Many entities already offer the service to open an account through their digital applications. Before lowering the application you must make sure that it is really from the entity. Therefore, download the application only from the Play Store and App Store from your cell phone. You should never transfer in advance to anyone.
If any entity generates doubts and it is very difficult to contact it better choose another from the list. Even, perhaps, your service is not so good.
Also, you never give your keys. If you are going to perform any operation on the entities’s websites, you better assure yourself that it is the official page, the same with the contact phones. It is better to look for the website address in an Internet search engine such as Google or Edge to enter the links that they send by WhatsApp, text messages, social networks or emails. In this case it is better to doubt and not be confident (a).
Do not provide your data to anyone, do not let them cheer you. It is better to prevent than regret.
