How does the DNA Bank work?
The official explained that when a crime occurs such as homicide, injury, deprivation of liberty, sexual assault, incest, kidnapping, rape, rape, human trafficking, among others of a sexual or gender nature, the probable perpetrators are subjected to a non-invasive genetic sampling through the oral cavity (saliva).
These samples are sent to the laboratory to check in less than 24 hours if a person was a victim of someone or if the probable perpetrator of a crime is related to other cases.
Ortega López pointed out that among the successful cases of the DNA bank, there is the evidence obtained against Daniel “N” known as the serial rapist of Oceania, involved in several sexual assaults against women, for which the public ministry achieved gather the evidence to get a judge to sentence this person to 159 years in prison.
He highlighted that genetic profiles of crime victims have been contained and the identification of corpses that remained unknown due to their degree of decomposition or incineration has been achieved.
“To accredit the DNA bank we had to carry out tests, tests, calibration and until now they have worked reference samples of 980 public servants and in the genetic laboratory almost 18,000 samplesthere are endless cases, today, with international certification, we can be sure that the results will be quick and that there will be less impunity,” he said.
Ortega López highlighted that the DNA bank will also serve so that when there is a person who is looking for a relative, they can check their genetic profile –after taking samples and analysis– without having to go to the Institute of Forensic Sciences to physically see the corpses and deal with situations that could be traumatic.
He said that also in places where a crime occurs, the experts take genetic samples, enter them in the laboratory and they are filed in the database.
“If someone presumes that an unknown corpse could be my relative, the interested party could donate their sample, we also take samples in places where a crime was committed, call it a private room, a hotel room, we search clothes, objects , the victim’s samples,” he described.
