Divorces in Colombia: who separates the most? This is what the figures say

It is a reality that there was a big change in the way couples choose to live together: while many opt for concubinage, others choose to marry “until death do them part,” and many more decide to divorce. In this sense, the Superintendence of Notaries and Registry shared who separates the most, heterosexual couples or same-sex couples. What are the figures?

What the divorce statistics in Colombia say

The numbers of divorces that happened in Colombia.

The Business Intelligence and Institutional Statistics Group of the aforementioned organization confirmed that Heterosexual couples divorce more than homosexual couples. The institution reached these results after having investigated figures between January 2023 and April 2024.

In this context, 88,069 marriages were registered and 32,567 divorces among heterosexual couples, which means that, for every 100 unions, 37 ended in divorce.

Meanwhile, during the same period, 918 ceremonies were held nuptials between same-sex couples: 477 between women and 441 between men. Of these unions, only 35 were dissolvedwhich reveals that For every 100 gay marriages, four end in divorce. This data denoted greater stability in homosexual weddings

Regarding this situation, Roosvelt Rodríguez Rengifo, superintendent of Notaries and Registry expressed: “This is a new reality, which remains fundamentally urban. It is concentrated in the large cities and, regionally, in Antioquia and the Coffee Region.”

In line with the official’s version, the largest number of marriages that occurred in this period of time occurred in “Antioquia (35), Bogotá (30) and Risaralda (19), with the surprise of Santander in fourth place (10) and Valle del Cauca in fifth (9)”they added.

Marriages between men gave the following records: “Antioquia (43), Bogotá (32), Valle (13), Quindío (4) and Atlántico (4). These figures contrast with the low records (between zero and one) in Amazonas, Boyacá, Caquetá, Casanare, Córdoba , Huila, Nariño and Vichada”, they point out from the Superintendence of Notaries and Registry.
