The Green Ecologist of Mexico (PVEM) and Labor (PT) parties, allies of Morena, continue in talks with the government of President Claudia Sheinbaum in order to integrate a joint proposal for electoral reform, although there are still points of dissent, including proportional representation.
The coordinator of the PVEM in the Senate, Manuel Velasco, commented in a collective interview that they are not closed or in an all or nothing position, but they will wait for the reform proposal to arrive. “Today you cannot be for or against something that does not yet exist.”
He explained that in meetings with Pablo Gómez, who coordinates the work for the initiative, both he and the party leader, Karen Castrejón, have raised “many observations.”
They do not agree, he said, with the approach of Morena and supported by sectors of the Citizen Movement to modify the way of assigning multi-member members, with the purpose of preventing party leaders from assigning them in a discretionary manner.
“We are also open to discussing a rethink, but we have to take care of it, or else the over-representation clause can be broken,” which limits the number of seats and seats that a party can accumulate. “That is an issue that matters to all Mexicans, not to a particular party,” stressed Senator Velasco.
Regarding the federal government’s argument that the change in proportional representation seeks to prevent party leaders from assigning themselves seats or seats on multi-member lists, it considered that greater citizen participation is desirable, but “the sovereignty of the parties to organize internally must be respected.”
Despite these differences, Senator Velasco said that they will continue at the dialogue tables on an electoral reform that has the support of all of Morena’s allies.
Separately, the deputy coordinator of the PT in the Senate, Geovanna Bañuelos, did not want to establish her position. He said that it would be “irresponsible” to advance definitions when President Claudia Sheinbaum’s initiative has not yet been presented.
