Dispersion (2)

Presidente Luis Abinader

The dispersion of debate topics on the national agenda characterizes the first weeks of President Abinader’s second government and the work of the opposition.

While the government appears to be competing with other governments in announcing reforms of all kinds, the opposition has also entered into a similar dynamic in its criticism, in what appears to be an unequal race with the State to impose the topics of debate.

Although it is in the government’s interest to maintain the dispersion, if the approach is based on a strategy and not on other reasons, it is not in the opposition’s interest.

Last week, the PLD did a good job of opposition, not dispersing when it took on the problem of the electrical issue for four consecutive days, disseminating the vision of its technicians. It even closed the week with criticism of President Luis Abinader’s statements that he plans to sell energy to Puerto Rico, a statement that was well received by public opinion due to the crisis affecting the energy service in the country.

Unlike the PLD, the FP has spread its strategy of criticizing the government. On Monday, the president of the organization, Leonel Fernández, wrote to pressure Congress to approve the referendum law, which, from his perspective, requires the constitutional reform proposed by Abinader.

On Tuesday, the organization’s health secretary held a press conference to denounce the ills of that sector with a focus on mental health. On Wednesday, it was the turn of the road safety secretary to refer to the traffic crisis caused by the incompetence of the Intrant.

Earlier, at the start of the school year, the issue of FP was criticising the lack of places for more than 4,000 students. However, despite the impact that the criticism of the deputy Selinée Méndez had on public opinion, on the problem and the erratic reactions of the Minister of Education on the attendance of children of foreigners to schools, the Greens dispersed on a subject that is particularly sensitive for the population.

So far, it seems that so many reforms together reduce the impact of those that affect the pocketbook, but in the opposition’s dispersion, the objective is not clear.
