His arrest for alleged administrative offenses was not very transparent. The Jesuit University System noted that there is no official record of his arrest or release. In addition, the authorities found his suitcase in the airport’s lost and found.
Given these irregularities, the Ibero-American University called this Friday for a peaceful demonstration in Puebla, with intermittent blockades in both directions of Bulevar del Niño Poblano.
This is what is known so far about the case, which has returned attention to the forced disappearance of people.
With more than 132,700 people missing in Mexico, this serious problem has caught the attention of the UN. But the government denies that the State is still responsible for the disappearances and argues that the perpetrators are criminal groups.
The irregularities in Leonardo’s arrest
Escobar Barrios is originally from Barranquilla, Colombia. He is 42 years old and has lived in Mexico for 10 years.
He arrived at the Monterrey airport on a flight from Bogotá, Colombia, where he spent the holidays. From there he planned to move to Mexico City and later to Puebla. But on January 6 he did not show up to work at the Universidad Iberoamericana.

On January 8, the institution released Leonardo’s search file, issued by the Nuevo León Person Search Commission. Five days later, the Jesuit University System published a statement denouncing “the inconsistencies and lack of clarity” in the case.
The document explains that Leonardo was detained on December 31 at the airport, but there is no official information about this process so far.
“There are indications of the participation of federal authorities, the National Immigration Institute and the National Guard, as well as the Apodaca Municipal Police. However, there is no report in the National Detention Registry that records his arrest or release,” he indicates.
