The director of the National Border Service (Senafront), Oriel Ortega, revealed this Sunday that the number of migrants at the immigration reception stations located in the Darién province and in Gualaca, Chiriquí province, has decreased.
According to Ortega, currently in the three shelters located in Darién there are less than 400 migrants, while in Gualaca there are about 500. He also said that the transit of migrants has dropped between 200 and 250 a day, since previously, the transit was between 500 and 600.
“The most critical months were August and September. During these months about 25 thousand migrants entered Panama. We had days that 2,500 people entered per day,” said the director of the entity in the Sunday Open Debate program.
He highlighted that Panama is the only country that performs biometric tests on migrants, so to date they have detected about 70 alerts from people with links to international terrorist groups or who have committed crimes in their countries.
According to a report from the Ministry of Security, so far in 2021 more than 42 thousand migrants have passed through Panama, seeking to move towards North America.
