At 5:18 in the afternoon, a seismic event was recorded in the triple point area of Panama, this had a magnitude of 6.9 according to the director of the Institute of Geosciences of the University of Panama, Nestor Luque, who spoke on Radio Panama about this natural phenomenon.
The seismology specialist spoke with Enrique Arosemena about the occurrence of this earthquake and said that this event originated 70 kilometers west of the island of Coiba and highlighted that there was a 4.2 magnitude aftershock.
He warned that other aftershocks smaller than 6.8 could occur during the night.
He said that the movement of the plates in Panama has nothing to do with tectonic movements in other areas of the world or with volcanic activity that occurs in other areas.
He stated that due to the magnitude and area this earthquake has nothing to do with tsunami alerts.
