Directors of the Land Transit and Transportation Authority (ATTT), have established a working group together with the National Directorate of Transit Operations (DNOT) and the National Highway Company (ENA), with the aim of reducing the number of accidents roads in the country.
The director of Driver Education of the ATTT Authority, Nicomedes Aizpurúa, indicated that this initiative seeks to increase the penalties of proven drunkenness, speeding, among others, due to the increase in vehicular collisions due to alcohol consumption in drivers who lead to loss of human lives.
He explained that it draws their attention that the penalties for speeding do not decrease. “Last year they were above 122,000. They were less than in 2019, but they remain too high,” she said.
“We need those who travel on the streets, whether as drivers or pedestrians, to be clear about the role they have to play to avoid accidents,” he said.
Aizpurúa stressed that “we are not interested in collecting more money. We are going to be vigilant that adjustments to the Traffic Regulations have the effect we are looking for, which is fewer accidents.”
Last week, an ATTT report detailed that the use of mobile devices while driving is the main consequence of minor traffic accidents, so it is contemplated that those who incur in this fault receive awareness talks.
The technical table studies modifications to Executive Decree No. 640, emphasizing the retention time of the driver’s license for those who incur penalties for drunkenness and speed.
