"Diplomatic storm" continues, adviser to Switzerland and UN resigns

The “diplomatic storm” in Nicaragua’s foreign policy continues, now in the United Nations (UN) and Switzerland. After the denunciation of the then Nicaraguan ambassador to the Organization of American States (OAS), Arturo McFields, there have been a series of resignations and movements in the diplomatic representation of the Ortega-Murillo dictatorship.

According to ministerial agreement 21-2022, published in The Gazette No. 68 this Friday, April 8, 2002, Daniel Ortega accepted the resignation of Mariela Regina Loáisiga García, who served as commercial attaché with the diplomatic rank of Counselor of the Nicaraguan Embassy in the Swiss Confederation and before the United Nations Office (UN).

Loáisiga García was appointed to the position according to ministerial agreement No. 15-2016, on February 12, 2016, published in La Gaceta, Official Gazette No. 46, on March 7, 2016.

To replace Loáisiga García, the regime appointed Silvio Zambrana Solano to occupy the position of commercial attaché with the diplomatic rank of adviser to the Nicaraguan Embassy in the Swiss Confederation and before the Office of the United Nations Organization (UN).

Zambrana was minister counselor of the permanent mission of Nicaragua to the World Trade Organization (WTO) and was later appointed permanent representative to the same organization.

Complaints and waivers

On March 27, the resignation of the international legal adviser of the Ortega-Murillo family, Paul Reichler, was announced before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague.

Paul Reichler confronted Ortega and explained that the reason for writing to him was to “terminate my relationship with you and your government.” In a gesture of disappointment, the lawyer told Ortega that “I don’t know what made you change, but you are no longer the Daniel Ortega whom I respected, admired, loved and served with pride for so many years.”

McFields, from the OAS, criticized the lack of constitutional guarantees, the situation of political prisoners, the migratory exodus and the state pressure against public servants.

On March 22, María Fernanda and María Michelle Gutiérrez Gaitán, the twins of the Sandinista deputy Wálmaro Gutiérrez, resigned from their positions as “advisors” in the Nicaraguan foreign service. Both had been appointed, through ministerial agreement 06-2020 and 07-2020, as counselors at the diplomatic headquarters of Switzerland and the United Nations in New York, respectively.

On March 10, Ortega decided to cancel his ambassador to the Kingdom of Spain, Carlos Midence, in view of the imminent expulsion of his diplomat due to the impediment of the return to the country of the Spanish ambassador María del Mar Fernández. Foreign Affairs of Nicaragua argued that his diplomat was the victim of “continuous pressure” and “threats” that he described as “interfering.”

On March 24, 14 days later, Midence was sent as ambassador of the dictatorship to Argentina. Ortega and Murillo did not provide more details about these diplomatic “moves” that came a day after McFields’ complaint.

That same day the dictator was awarded a new presidential adviser, Orlando Tardencilla, the file that the regime proposed to occupy the General Secretariat of the Central American Integration System (SICA) and that was rejected, later sent him as ambassador to the United Nations and only He left him three months in office. He now placed it as his representative to the Organization of American States (OAS).

A day later, on March 25, Daniel Ortega canceled the appointment of Colonel Mario Napoleón Vindell Midence, in the position of concurrent Defense, Military, Naval and Air Attaché to the Nicaraguan Embassy in the Republic of Guatemala. In place of Vindell Midence, Daniel Ortega appointed Infantry Lieutenant Colonel Guillermo Guzmán González to the position..
