Diosdado Cabello: On February 4, 1992, we rose up against US imperialism

On February 4, 1992, a group of soldiers rose up against the then President of the Republic, Carlos Andrés Pérez. The coup attempt, which failed, was headed by Hugo Chávez Frías. 31 years after this date, the ruling party summons its followers to march in Caracas to continue “fighting for the independence and sovereignty of the homeland”

“Comrades, unfortunately for now the objectives that we set ourselves have not been achieved in the capital city, that is, we here in Caracas have not been able to control power,” former President Hugo Chávez Frías said 31 years ago (February 4, 1992) after the attempted coup against the government of Carlos Andrés Pérez, headed by him and accompanied by four other commanders.

This Saturday, from the Cuartel de la Montaña, Diosdado Cabello, first vice president of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (SUV) and who also participated in that coup attempt, said that at that time, «some of us rose up, without knowing it, against North American imperialism, which was the ones who governed this country; this country had been handed over to the International Monetary Fund.”

He also indicated that at that time the Venezuelan people were submerged in the misery that was caused by the delivery of the country’s wealth to foreign powers and transnational corporations.

Cabello assured that between 1991 and 1992 in the country more than 90 leaders were assassinated in response to government policies of what they call the Fourth Republic and condemned the fact that the “OAS (Organization of American States) was not seen asking for our freedom, we have never seen the US embassy pronounce itself on our state of health, worrying about the people of Venezuela”.

Despite the fact that there is nothing to celebrate, several leaders of the ruling party called their supporters to march in Caracas this Saturday 4F. The mobilization was called: «Great March 4F: For now and forever!» to remember the “date that divided the history of Venezuela in two” and also to “fight for the independence and sovereignty of the homeland”; according to Cabello.

The march will start from two points: Zona Rental, in the vicinity of the Bolivarian National Intelligence Service (Sebin) and from Nueva Granada avenue, bound for the courtyard of the Military Academy.

The coup d’état against then-president Carlos Andrés Pérez was hatched in secrecy by the Bolivarian Movement 200 (MBR-200), organized from within the Armed Forces. The coup leaders began their rebellion at 12 in the morning of 4F with an attack on the Miraflores Palace; however, the Venezuelans did not take to the streets to support this coup as the military rebels requested.

Official figures say that after this attempt, 32 people died; but other sources such as the newspaper Last News published in those days that the death toll was over 100. For his part, Fernando Ochoa Antich, who was Minister of Defense, reported that 39 deaths were recorded that day.
