The new president of Peru, Dina Boluarte, continues this Friday the negotiations to form a government after the dismissal and arrest of Pedro Castillo, accused of a coup attempt, while his followers demand his release and the call for elections.
Two days after he failed in his attempt to dissolve Congress, Castillo remained detained in the same place where ex-president Alberto Fujimori is serving his prison, which is the base of the special police forces, located to the east of the city of Lima. , reported the AFP agency.
The Prosecutor’s Office accuses Castillo of rebellion and conspiracy, and a high court ordered seven days of preliminary prison.
Meanwhile, the demonstrations in various cities of Peru in favor of Pedro Castillo have increased in recent hours.
The protests included in the last hours the blockade of the Panamericana Sur highway in the Ica and Arequipa region.
This Friday, however, all eyes are also on a ceremony by the Peruvian army for the 198th anniversary of the Battle of Ayacucho, which sealed the end of Spanish colonial domination in Latin America.
As planned, Boluarte will attend this event and deliver a speech to the military, who played a key role in Castillo’s downfall by not supporting the emergency regime he proposed.
Castillo tried to dissolve the legislature and govern by decree, but his orders were ignored by Congress and the Armed Forces.
