In reality, Fujimori is considered the seventh most corrupt president in the worldwith an estimated stolen funds of approximately US$600 million, according to the Global Report on Corruption 2004, prepared by the NGO Transparency International. The sixth most corrupt head of state is Jean Claude Duvalier, former head of state of Haiti between 1981 and 1986.

According to the book History of Corruption in Peru, written by Peruvian historian Alfonso Quiroz, based on investigations by the Congress of the Republic and the Judiciary, it is estimated that Fujimori benefited from approximately US$404 million of public funds during the presidency through the illegal abuse of power.

The cost of corruption in the deactivated National Intelligence Service (SIN) was approximately US$450 million and an additional US$200 million in the Military Pension Fund.

National mourning from Congress

After learning of the death of Alberto Fujimori, Congressman Juan Burgos Oliveros, from the Podemos Peru party, presented to Parliament the proposal to declare National Mourning for three days. The initiative was approved and the government of Dina Boluarte formalized the measure through the Supreme Decree 094-2024-PCMwhich was published in the official newspaper El Peruano and includes the following implications:

  • In all public buildings, military installations, bases, ships and State dependencies in Peruvian territory, as well as in diplomatic missions, consulates and representations abroad, the National Flag is hoisted at half-mast.
  • Academic activities continue to develop as usual, therefore, students must attend their educational institutions as usual. Likewise, both public and private sector workers must carry out their operational duties, which have not been suspended.

Wake for Alberto Fujimori

Alberto Fujimori’s wake is taking place at the Museo de la Nación, located on Avenida Javier Prado Este, in San Borja. The funeral ceremony began at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 12 and will continue until the morning of Saturday, September 14, when his remains will be taken to the Campo Fe cemetery in Huachipa.
