The president said that Petroperú’s problems date back years. “The causes may be different: corruption, inefficiency, incompetence; but our government is proposing that Petroperú must recover what it once was,” she said.

In this regard, he said that his government is working “to move forward the only strategic company that the country has.” He also indicated that the government even has a debt with the state oil company. However, he considered that Petroperú officials should do some self-criticism.

“We cannot have a bureaucratic payroll in times of crisis, But we are not going to privatize Petroperú either.“because it is a company that brings fuel to places where private companies cannot reach,” he said.

The president also referred to the resignation of the board of directors of Petroperú, which was announced in the morning. The resigning officials said that the government had not responded to the proposals offered to address the company’s crisis.

In response, Boluarte said that the job will be assigned to “public officials who love the country.” “The board of directors of Petroperú has resigned, that’s correct, we will have to appoint public officials who love the country, who create opportunities for solutions. We can have constructive criticism, but we all create progress,” he said.

The board of directors resigned

The president’s statement came hours after the resignation of the board of directors of Petroperú was announced. The former directors published a statement in which they attribute the reasons for their resignation to the fact that the Executive has not responded to the proposals offered to solve the serious crisis that the state oil company is going through.

“They have been told that it is necessary to make the best decision regarding the future of the company. After several days have passed without the government making any statement, the directors appointed by the AGM have unanimously submitted our resignation,” the document states.
