Dina Boluarte takes stock of APEC 2024: ‘It strengthened our image in the world’

APEC 2024

President Dina Boluarte closed the APEC 2024 and addressed the national and international media at the Lima Convention Center, to give a general assessment of the summit, which he described as successful and a milestone that strengthens the country’s image in the world.

The president highlighted each of the achievements achieved this year, with the participation of more than 7,400 delegates, 1,200 business leaders from the Asia Pacific and 2,500 journalists.

“(…) The successful exercise of the APEC presidency for the third time in the history of Peru has marked a milestone that strengthens our presence at the international level, our positioning in the Asia Pacific and our country image as a reliable partner, opening new opportunities for trade, investment and international cooperation for the benefit of our population,” he said.

Likewise, he highlighted that during the APEC presidency, more than 280 international events were organized, including the Economic Leaders Week and the Business Summit, as well as 11 ministerial meetings held in five different cities, “promoting decentralization and reinforcing the international image of our country as destination of tourism and foreign investment”.

Furthermore, he highlighted that one of the most important achievements was the restoration of consensus in APEC, which translates into the adoption of seven technical political instruments and the approval of 11 ministerial declarations.

At another time, he highlighted the APEC Ciudadano initiative led by the Foreign Ministry, which aimed to bring the benefits of this forum to Peruvian civil society, through 165 events this year.

“I want to especially thank the Peruvian population for their commitment, seriousness and patriotism in this Leaders Week (…) and thank the national and international press,” he added.

THREE PRIORITIES

Boluarte also highlighted the Ichma Declaration on a new look at a free trade agreement in the Asia Pacific, an instrument that will allow promoting economic integration in a comprehensive and systematic way.

“This declaration allows work on new international trade issues such as digitalization, sustainability and inclusion,” he added.

On the other hand, the president specified that in the year of the APEC presidency, three thematic priorities were raised: trade and investment for inclusive and interconnected growth; innovation and digitalization to promote the transition to the formal and global economy; and sustainable growth for resilient development.

He also explained that the Declaration of the 31st APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting reflects “our vision to build an Asia Pacific community that is prosperous, peaceful and resilient, empowering our populations to receive the benefits of the global economy.”
