Dilemma in the goal of Uruguay

Dilema en el arco de Uruguay

For the first time in sixteen years, Óscar Washington Tabárez will not be seen on the Uruguay bench and, in his place, will be Diego Alonso. The new coach arrives to impose new airs on a national team that is playing for the World Cup in Qatar. At this time, La Celeste is out of the qualifying positions and their two parties appear crucial in their World Cup aspirations. Paraguay and Venezuela will be their two rivals in this qualifying break.

The change of cards on the bench will not be the only one to be witnessed in Asunción because Alonso’s first decisions as coach will be seen after summoning seven new faces. In the goal there will be a great change because Fernando Muslera did not enter the call due to a severe tear in the inner collateral ligaments of his left knee. The coach summoned Sebastián Sosa, Sergio Rochet, Guillermo De Amores and Martín Campaña to replace the Galatasaray player

It will not be easy to replace on the pitch a goalkeeper who has been a starter from October 2009 until the last qualifying break in November. Muslera is an idol and an institution in goal for Uruguay where he managed to win the 2011 Copa América against Paraguay. In the last 12 years, the Galatasaray goalkeeper has worn the shirt of his team a total of 131 games, conceding 133 goals and leaving the fence undefeated on 52 occasions. He has played three World Cups (2010-2014-2018), one Confederations Cup (2013) and five Copa América (2011-2015-2016-2019-2021).

Candidates for the goal of Uruguay

Serge Rochet (28 years old) has not yet debuted with Uruguay although he has been the third goalkeeper of the team for several years. His name sounds more and more strongly to start the match against Paraguay.

William of Amores (27 years old) arrives in Uruguay after becoming champion with Deportivo Calí. His great year has opened the doors of his team.

Martin Campaign (32 years old) has been Muslera’s substitute when he has not defended the Uruguayan goal. His last appearance was last November 2020 in the match against Brazil corresponding to the Qatar World Cup qualifier. In total he has played four games with Celeste.

Sebastian Sosa (35 years old) receives his first call-up with Uruguay at a late age. Last season he played it all with Independiente de Avellanada and has a long career at club level. His experience and seniority can help the squad for this double date.
