the congresswoman dignified street was pronounced after presenting his resignation letter to the Board of Directors of the Parliament. In an interview for La República, he explained why he resigned from office in the context of the political crisis. Likewise, he exposes the position of the congressmen who reject the early elections in view of protests in the country.
What led to your resignation from the Board of Directors?
—What motivated me to resign is that the early elections are getting longer. I introduced a bill to leave in 2022 and so far we have not reached a consensus. We have more than 60 deaths and it is not possible that, as congressmen, we turn a deaf ear to what the population is really asking for, which is an early election. There are four sessions and 11 votes plus the last session in the Constitution Commission, and nothing has been achieved.
—Is the advancement of elections the position of the Podemos bench or is it a personal matter?
—I have the support of my bench in the proposal to advance the elections and also to resign from the vice presidency of Congress. It is a coherent decision because I was the first to present the project in 2022.
—Last Friday, in the Constitution Commission, congressman José Luis Elías voted against, what happened?
—That is the position of my colleague. In Podemos we have freedom. We align ourselves with the issues of the caucus, but the final decision they deem appropriate depends on each congressman.
“Will it take a toll on you?”
—The Podemos bench has requested the recomposition of the Constitution Commission. In this way, colleague José Luis Elías will be removed.
—What motivations do you think parliamentarians have for not approving the early elections?
—Unfortunately, I have to tell you that the motivations that congressmen have for not leaving office is the salary they receive. More than 80% of congressmen improved their economic income. They changed their lifestyle that they had. Unfortunate, that causes them to cling to their position, make excuses and delay time, that is, they don’t want to leave because now they earn more.
—Some experience since your initiative.
—The first time I presented the project to advance elections, on one occasion, I had lunch with Congresswoman Patricia Juárez, who at the time chaired the Constitution Commission. She told me that she had to withdraw the initiative because, anyway, it was going to be archived. Another case was the congresswoman Lady Camones, who was uncomfortable and told me to tone her down because she couldn’t go against my colleagues, let alone use the vice presidency to publicize the projects. Actually, several colleagues approached me to tell me not to present the project, but I don’t want to go into details because later they can misinterpret and give statements.
