Red Bull Formula One team boss Christian Horner on Saturday called Mateschitz a “passionate supporter” and “the backbone of everything we do.”
“It’s very, very sad,” Horner said in Austin, Texas, where he was racing at the United States Grand Prix. “A great man like few for what he has achieved and what he has done for so many people around the world and in so many sports.”
He told Sky Sports F1 that Mateschitz was “a man of vision, strength and unafraid to follow his dreams as he did here in Formula One. He showed that you can make a difference.”
“He was a passionate supporter and the backbone of everything we do. An extraordinary man and an inspiring individual,” added Horner.
Mateschitz built a sports and media empire around the energy drink Red Bullwhich gave him worldwide fame.
Owner of the paradise island Laucala, in Fiji, Forbes magazine in 2002 placed him as the richest man in Austriawith a fortune of 27,400 million euros.
