Diesel ship arrives in Cuba to “alleviate” fuel crisis

Buque con combustible diésel en Matanzas

MIAMI, United States. — A ship with diesel arrived this Wednesday at the port of Matanzas to alleviate the crisis of shortage of crude oil that Cuba is going through.

official media de la Isla indicated that the ship docked at the dock of the Matanzas Supertanker Base and is already in operation. According to the information, the arrival of the tanker “complies with the contracts of the Cuba-Petróleo Union (CUPET) with international suppliers.”

Ower Luis Grau Núñez, head of the dock area of the Matanzas Fuel Marketing Territorial Division, declared that the transfer of fuel is done quickly to be dispatched to various provinces.

“The transfer that we carried out this morning is faster than usual, because the ship does not unload to land but transfers the product to another ship docked at the Juan A. Morales Bayona dock. When it is finished, the quality protocol is complied with, it is dispatched and leaves for the destinations of Havana, Camagüey and Santiago de Cuba”, explained the manager.

In this sense, Grau Núñez maintained that the objective was to carry out the maneuver in the shortest possible time.

“The Bay of Matanzas has specific conditions after eleven in the morning. At that time the air rises and the transfer of ships is complicated, ”he specified.’

The state press report adds that on the evening of this Friday, April 28, the diesel unloading operations must conclude. The entry of new fuel tankers is also expected in the coming days.

Lázaro Quintero Hernández, head of the commercial area of the Matanzas Fuel Marketing Territorial Division, told Cubadebate that the arrival does not represent an increase in delivery, but that the reduced figures by territory will continue in the midst of the energy contingency.

“Although it is not a significant improvement, it does guarantee stability in vital services in each of the country’s provinces,” said the manager.

Cuba goes through the worst fuel supply crisis registered since the so-called “juncture” of 2019, when the Island ran out of the necessary supplies to guarantee demand, most of them coming from Venezuela.

In recent weeks there have been numerous queues at service centers and supply centers throughout the country, a situation that has generated dissatisfaction in a large part of the population.
